Are Free Online College Courses Truly Valuable?

With the rise of free online college courses, many are wondering if they really provide any value. While some platforms offer a wealth of resources and personalized support, others may only scratch the surface of learning.

What has your experience been like with free online courses? Are there specific platforms or courses that particularly impressed you with their quality? It would be interesting to discuss whether these courses can stand up to traditional college classes.

Do you think the absence of a recognized degree diminishes the value of what you learn? Or do you believe the acquired knowledge is more important? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

I’ve taken a bunch of free courses, and honestly, some were surprisingly good, like that intro CS course on edX. But I did find that without the structure of a degree program, it was easy to lose motivation. Knowledge is great, but the credential still matters in job applications, at least for now.

I’ve taken a few free courses on Coursera and found them super helpful, especially in skill areas like coding and data analysis. Sometimes the quality varies, but if you get a good instructor, it can feel just as valuable as a paid class. Honestly, the knowledge you gain matters more than a piece of paper, especially in tech fields where skills are key.
