Are online adult education courses effective for building skills?

Choosing the right online adult education courses can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options out there—ranging from philosophy to tech skills. I’ve been exploring various MOOCs lately, and while some have been quite engaging, others didn’t quite meet my expectations.

One challenge I face is balancing the variety of subjects with the depth needed to actually master a skill. For instance, I’m currently taking courses in both philosophy and data science, but I sometimes worry I’m just skimming the surface rather than diving into either topic. How do others approach this? Do you focus on mastering one subject, or do you prefer mixing things up?

What strategies do you use to determine if a course is worth your time? Have you come across any specific courses or platforms that you found particularly effective?

I totally get the struggle with balancing subjects. I usually stick to one or two courses at a time to really dive deep, and checking reviews before enrolling helps a lot. For tech stuff, I’ve had good luck with platforms like Coursera—some courses really dig into details without feeling rushed.

I think mixing subjects is cool, but I get what you mean about skimming. I usually try to stick to one skill at a time, like I focused on coding for a few months before adding something like creative writing. For picking courses, I look for reviews or see if they offer a free trial to test the waters. Have you tried that?
