How valuable are Coursera certificates in 2026?

With so many online learning platforms out there, I can’t help but wonder about the actual value of Coursera certificates. After finishing a few courses, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge, but the recognition of these certificates seems to differ across the job market. Some employers appreciate the initiative, while others don’t seem to care at all.

This raises concerns for those of us investing time and money into these courses. Are they really worth it if recruiters don’t see them as valuable? I’d love to hear from anyone who has used Coursera certificates in their career or education. Did they help you in job applications or career advancement?

What’s your take? Are there specific industries where these certificates are more respected, or are they just another checkbox on the resume?

Honestly, I think it really varies by industry. I’ve seen tech companies value them, but my friend in finance said they’re pretty much ignored there. It’s frustrating to feel like you’re jumping through hoops for a piece of paper that might not mean much to someone else.

I’ve had some success with Coursera certificates when applying for jobs in tech. A couple of hiring managers even mentioned they liked seeing that I took the initiative to upskill, especially in data science. But yeah, it totally varies by industry—I’ve seen it matter more in startups than in more traditional corporate roles.
