What are the best online chemistry courses for self-study in 2026?

Choosing the right online chemistry course can be tough, especially with a busy schedule. There are so many options out there, and it’s hard to tell which ones really help build a solid understanding of the basics. I’m specifically looking for courses that focus on detailed explanations and provide reading materials instead of just relying on video lectures.

Since I prefer using textbooks and taking handwritten notes in GoodNotes, I want to make sure the courses I select will help me get back into effective study habits. Has anyone found online chemistry courses that fit this style? What resources or platforms do you recommend for a thorough and engaging learning experience?

Check out Coursera’s courses—they often have great reading materials and PDFs to accompany the videos. I found the “Chemistry” course by the University of Kentucky really helpful for note-taking. It’s laid out well for self-paced learning if you prefer textbooks.

I tried a course on Coursera that had a solid mix of readings and interactive quizzes. The textbook they recommended was really comprehensive, and it helped me stick to taking notes like I wanted. Definitely made it easier to get back into the groove of studying!
